Grace Demands a Response

Passage: Matthew 2:1-12

God’s grace demands a response.

1) Don’t ignore Christ as King. (vs. 1-2)  We don’t intentionally ignore Christ, but we do.  The biggest way we ignore God is when we don’t want change in our lives.  When we look around and say, “Things are good,” we often fail to recognize that it was God who brought us into that season.  Or we fail to give Him glory for it.  We too often ignore God when we don’t need God.  Look to God in every season of life.

2) Don’t be irritated by Christ as King. (vs. 3, 7-8)  How do you respond when God answers you with a “no” when you wanted a “yes?”  Or maybe you wanted a “no” and God gave you a “yes.”  One of the hardest parts of your relationship with Jesus is knowing you would rather be in Jesus’ plans even if they aren’t your plans.  So, what do we do? How do we not become irritated?  Tell God, “I trust you.”  It’s not easy. And it may be hard to fully mean it, but pray that God would give you the faith to trust Him.  God’s grace became a reality for us.  We have to trust God’s bigger plan, even when it doesn’t make sense to us.

3) Don’t be indifferent towards Christ as King. (vs. 4-6)  Life gets so busy. And while we are spinning a bunch of different plates, we just accidently hit the switch and start becoming indifferent towards God.   When we try to fit God into our lives rather than living our lives for God, we miss God.  Ironically enough, the Christmas season – the time of the year we celebrate Christ as King – is the season that we often spend the least amount of time with Him.   The easiest way to avoid this setting in life is by prioritizing your relationship with God.  Make Him the first thing you think about in the morning and last thought before you fall asleep.

4) Be ignited by Christ as King. (vs. 9-12)   “Falling to their knees, they worshiped Him”.  The glory of God revealed the King and ignited worship in the Wise Men.  You see the anticipation of this whole passage leading up until this point.  Be ignited by God’s grace!  The King has come – as man – to dwell among us!  Let that ignite you!
