We are Praying for Covenant School

March 28, 2023

As the news of the Covenant School tragedy began to come in yesterday, my heart began to break. My heart was broken for the loss of life, for the grieving families, and for the trauma experienced by so many children. My heart grieves alongside all of those impacted by what occurred yesterday.

As a church, we are going to immediately respond in two ways:
  • Spend time every day this week praying for every child, every parent, every teacher, and every officer involved. Pray that God would work in a situation that seems unexplainable to us.
  • This Sunday, we are going to set aside time during our worship to write prayer cards for Covenant School. We are going to tangibly let them know we are praying for them.

Parents, I encourage you to lead your children through this time as well. While it may be difficult, your children will look to you. I came across some talking points that might be helpful in talking with your kids about what happened yesterday:
  1. Stay calm.
  2. Be the source.
  3. Let them lead.
  4. Give them space to feel.
  5. It's okay to feel with them, not process with them.
  6. Answer questions age-appropriately and honestly.
  7. Talk about what they can control.
  8. Look for the helpers. Be one.
  9. Ask them what would help them feel safe at school.
  10. Don't feel like you have to have all the answers.
  11. Remind them of the truth you know.
